The missed challenge of Daniel
We often read the story of Daniel in the lions’ den, and are inspired, excited and emboldened to take steps of faith, to stand against the enemy no matter what the cost, to prove to those around us that we rely on God no matter what they threaten us with.
Having recently preached through the story of Daniel however, I was struck, not with the supernatural miracle, not with the way Daniel stood up for righteousness in the face of becoming food for some hungry lions, but in what the officials who wanted to be rid of Daniel concluded:
“but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault, because he was faithful, and no error or fault was found in him.” – Daniel 6:4
What a testimony for Daniel.
Now if anyone had cause to feel they did not need to honour their employer, it was Daniel; taken from his home land, given a new name, made to work for the king who conquered his people, possibly even being turned into a literal eunuch! And yet, those who went looking for fault could find none, not even a scrap.
I wonder what it would look like if we as Christians were as eager to follow Daniel’s example in the simple day to day of working hard and honouring our employers and not just in the times of confrontation. I wonder how many more opportunities this would give us to see amazing things happen for God.
