Invite Jesus to the Folk Festival

The 2018 Wimborne Folk Festival was such a great success. Thousands of people attended and the streets of Wimborne were the busiest I’ve ever seen them. On one side of the street, there were people making wood carvings; on the other, traditional morris dancers. There were kids activities, foodie stands, home-made knitted jumpers, lots of music, and, of course, there was Good News Church.

Life is busy, but even still, last year, numerous members of Good News Church gave up their time to volunteer at the Folk Festival. They could have been having a lie in, enjoying the sunshine, walking around the folk festival eating various delicious foods… but they chose to stand with their church family giving out bracelets, balloons and smiles.

When the people of Wimborne came to our stand (and many did!), they were amazed that everything was free, that people cared enough to ask them how they were doing. Some people hadn’t realised that there was a church that met at QE school. Others had never interacted with a Christian (that they knew of!). Families were glad for a little bit of break, somewhere to sit down and the option for their children to play in our sandpit.

Honestly, I don’t think anyone became a Christian right then and there because we handed them a balloon (that I know of!) but we were being the embodiment of Christ and showcasing some of His love for the town using our various skills. Our church vision is "To see hundreds of lives transformed by the love of God." the seeds planted at the Folk Festival (which could have come from kindness, conversations, prayer and many other things!), quite easily could have been the beginning of someone’s life transformation.

You’ve probably heard this famous bible verse from 1 Corinthians 12 about the church being the body of Christ ‘Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.’ The people of Good News were forming the body of Jesus at Wimborne Folk Festival. Whether you are able to set up the stand, give someone a bracelet, face paint a heart or just have a chat to someone, all jobs are equally valuable! We want to show Wimborne the love Jesus has for its people. We offer our bodies as a living sacrifice to God just as it says to do in Romans 12:1-2. We worship Him and bring glory to Him through the actions we take. We invite Jesus to the Folk Festival.
